Led by steel guitar virtuoso Masami "MATT" Kobayashi, this unique ensemble represents a profound musical bridge spanning from Tokyo to Oahu.
Self-taught since his university days, MATT chose a distinctive path, refining his craft as a versatile freelance player across numerous prominent stages rather than anchoring to a single band. His artistry reached a pivotal turning point in 2010 during a six-year residency in Hawai‘i, where he became an integral part of the legendary weekly kanikapila sessions at the historic Royal Grove Hotel.
This performance at J-FESTA 2026 brings that cherished Waikīkī legacy back to life, reuniting MATT with the very host band members who shaped those magical musical nights. The lineup features the gentle leadership of Leonard Jenkins on ‘ukulele, the sophisticated jazz-infused styling of Ernie Morikubo on guitar, the deep-rooted Hawaiian heritage of Poki‘i Vaughan on guitar, and the resonant foundation of Hovey Lambert on upright bass. Their sound is beautifully animated by the authentic, heartfelt hula storytelling of Caroline Affonso and Kela Cuban. Together, they invite the audience to step into the warm, nostalgic, and exhilarating atmosphere of a true Waikīkī kanikapila, born from a decade of unbreakable bonds and shared aloha.
